MCAT Test Prep Book Reviews
The Kaplan MCAT Complete 7 Book Subject Review, Second Edition.
To this date, the Kaplan’s MCAT complete 7Book Subject review is still the best MCAT preparation book (in my opinion) in the market. It now has a second edition, which is just the same as the first one, only this time it goes for a slightly lower price.
This best-selling set gives a broad range of information on MCAT, in addition to the colorful and detailed diagrams and illustrations. It ideally has clear text and an excellent layout, which is especially perfect for visual learners. With all this, this MCAT set should be at the core of your preparation strategy.
This extended and now revised set offers 7-subject specific books, which are: Biology, Biochemistry, General Chemistry, Math and Physics, Behavior Sciences, Organic Chemistry as well as Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills.
As a reader, you will ideally benefit from the numerous MCAT practice questions found throughout the books. You will also get targeted practice tests at every conclusion of a chapter, Full-length MCAT practice questions and access to helpful and comprehensive online resources. The questions are well-written and are similar to issues presented on an actual MCAT.
The Kaplan team has devoted more resources this time that any other publisher. It’s no doubt that the quality, readability, and freshness of materials offered in this set make you more than ready for the MCAT. This is a must-have resource, one that replicates the MCAT. So, if you are looking for Prep books and materials that are just right for you, then you can’t go wrong with this one.
Princeton Review MCAT Subject Review Complete Set, Second Edition
The second position on our carefully planned list goes to the Princeton Review’s MCAT Subject Review Complete Box Set, Second Edition. This set has all the information you need to pass the MCAT. In fact, I would describe it as a juggernaut of information, for those in need for complete preparation for the MCAT.
Ideally, this set has been revised for the new version of the MCAT. Now, it’s in the second, newly improved and extended edition, longer in terms of page numbers, even when compared to the Kaplan’s new version. It has an excellent coverage of the 3 new sections of the MCAT, which are biochemistry, sociology and psychology. Also, it consists of the seven subject review books which we mentioned in the Kaplan’s set review.
When it comes to practice questions, you can’t go wrong with this resource as it has been equipped with over 2,400 realistic questions. There’s also 3 full-length practice tests, which sufficiently relate to the new MCAT version. However, they tend to be on the harder side of the test, which shouldn’t be that bad for enthusiastic test-takers. Access to online material with helpful information and tips regarding the exam is ideally provided.
The books are nothing short of well written and presented, putting more focus on a simplistic style with colorful illustrations and diagrams. End of chapter summaries and glossaries have not been left out, which are particularly useful for reference purposes. The books’ presentation is excellent, even though it does not beat the Kaplan’s. The real downside is that some of the books in this set are in their first edition while others boast of the third revision. This can be very confusing to the reader.
Well, in overall, the Princeton set is a solid one, highly readable and a complete study guide. Also, the practice questions are very similar to the MCAT actual ones, and this makes it one of the best books sets out there. Even though it comes with a high price tag, it’s a set full of resources and information you won’t get anywhere else. In short, it’s well worth your every penny.
The Princeton Review Complete MCAT Set
If you are on the look for a guide that covers everything in the new MCAT version in a concise manner, then the Princeton Review Complete MCAT is the best prep resource material for you. This is simply because this set gives you a one-stop-shop for all your prep needs.
The Princeton Review Complete MCAT guide consists of all the basics of the MCAT: Psychology and Sociology, Organic Chemistry, Physics, Biology, General Chemistry, Critical Analysis and Reasoning Skills all included. The set also gives the reader an excellent content review at the end of every chapter, which is particularly a useful resource for targeted practice questions. Other significant features of this MCAT prep set includes expert content reviews and online access to 4 full-length practice exams with answers.
Given the scope of the MCAT, this set cannot really compare to what other publishers like the Kaplan offer. In some sense, the set is not as complete as it claims. However, it acts as an ideal supplement to other study guides. It’s excellent as a resource for more practice exam questions or as a refresher.
Examkrackers MCAT Complete Study Pack, Ninth Edition
Given the fact that is a completely remastered ninth edition, this set offers nothing short of complete and needed materials and tools for the aspiring MCAT test taker.
This set offers 6 books which include: Biology 1: Molecules Manual; Biology 2: Systems Manual, Chemistry Manual, Reasoning Skills: Verbal (CARS), Psychology & Sociology Manual, Research and Math as well as Physics Manual.
The set is written in Written in Jonathan Orsay’s style, which is an easy to understand style with a sole focus of giving the readers only the information needed for the MCAT test. It ideally gives hints on the material to focus on. In addition to this, each of the books in the package has practice questions as well as four to seven 30-minute topical exams that emulate the actual MCAT exam.
If you are on the hunt for concrete, MCAT prep study material, then this Examkrackers set will certainly (on its own or as a supplement of other guides) provide all that you are looking for. It ideally boasts an array of illustrations and diagrams, making it even more enjoyable to read.
Gold Standard Review Complete MCAT
This one is a substantial home study set, particularly ideal for the lovers of thorough test taking, and with a preference for audiovisuals.
The Gold Standard Review MCAT including AAMC Guide is very impressive study kit, filled with books, audio tracks, and videos that cover the test subjects on the new MCAT version. The package comes with the extensive book and video reviews of every subject tested in the MCAT, a copy of the AAMC or the Association of American Medical Colleges official guide, audio tracks as well as the flashcard study system with a mobile app. Buyers of this home study kit also get a DVD on the medical school interview and tips on how to master it.
Online access is also provided to the practice exams which stimulate the MCAT test’s computer interface. The practice exams come with instant scoring and explanations. It’s is worth taking note that the lead author of these tests is Dr. Brett Ferdinand, MD, who is renowned for compiling some of the most hardest and realistic practice exams. However, this online access is limited to just four months, a downside for many, even though it’s enough duration for the average test taker.
Well, this study kit does go for a cheap price, but I can say it’s worth every single penny. This is especially true if you want a package that will serve best as a replacement for attending MCAT course classes.
Other Study Guides To Think About
Sterling Test Prep MCAT Tests
The Sterling Test Prep MCAT Practice Tests are detailed and full of through explanations, which are two unprecedented benefits for the intensive reader. The guide covers Biological & Biochemical Foundations and Chemical & Physical Foundations, which are regularly updated by the publisher.
The book gives a very useful foundation or a lake of resources for the materials needed to master the MCAT science’s subjects. The book has 4 practice tests for every subject. That is 4 Chemical & Physical Foundations practice tests and 4 Biological & Biochemical Foundations tests. Ideally, the reader is given detailed explanations for every correct answer and explanations as to why other solutions do not apply.
In addition to this plethora of features, readers also get access to online practice tests that simulate the computer-based interface of the MCAT actual exam. The tests are not easy, but they can be mastered simply by more practice. Given the focus of this guide, and the quality it offers the readers, the Sterling test prep guide is among the best MCAT preparation books out there.
Kaplan MCAT 528: Advanced Prep for Advanced Students
If you have studied and fully prepared for the MCAT, but you are looking to get an unbeatable score, this prep book, designed for intensive readers will bring out the best of you.
The Kaplan MCAT 528 is meant to supplement whatever you have learned by presenting itself as a more subject-specific guide. What is the best way to solve an individual problem? How do you approach a particular question in the MCAT? What are the examiners looking for? How is answering an organic chemistry question different from answering a biology question? All these are issues that the Kaplan MCAT 528 guide seeks to answer. Through suggesting reading strategies and emphasizing skills, this guide teaches the strengths that an individual looking to join the best medical school must possess. The guide also offers numerous practice questions and online access to tests as well.
This guide is certainly not for beginners, but it is one of the best MCAT exam prep books in the market, for advanced students.
Kaplan MCAT Flashcards and APP
It’s no doubt that most of us like to give our brains a quick refresh on whatever we have read. Well, flashcards are the best for this, and while you might take this as a form of fast food during preparation, the contents in this guide are certainly satisfying.
The Kaplan’s Flashcards and App set has 1000 flashcards for study and review of biological and physical sciences right on the go. These cards boast of key concepts, definitions, and terms for the MCAT in a short format.
Regardless of the topic of study, these cards ensure that you have a fun learning experience and additional knowledge. As such, I would highly recommend this guide as a companion to the conventional MCAT prep study books.
NextStep MCAT Psychology and Sociology
The new MCAT’s section (Social, Psychological and Biological Foundations of Behavior) is perhaps the most overlooked part of the new version of MCAT. It’s totally understandable that most people usually focus on the science topics, but this does not mean that the added section should be ignored.
Fortunately, Bryan Schnedeker of NextStep has come up with an ideal resource guide for this section only.
The 400 pages in this book give the reader smart and unmatched strategies and techniques of handling the new section. The guide not only focuses on giving the reader knowledge but also covers how to apply it. With this book, you will learn how to identify the correct answers, even for the hardest of questions.
The book is written in an easy to understand style, making it one of the best prep books for MCAT, particularly on the new sociology and psychology fields.
So, there you have it; the top 10 MCAT prep study books. Whether you are in for extensive research, quick reminders or even advanced study. You can’t really go wrong with any of the listed prep books. All the best.
